FAQs on Laser Vaginal Therapy:

Why Might Women Seek Out Laser Vaginal Therapy?

Laser Vaginal Therapy can treat a number of issues that affect the reproductive system - particularly the vaginal canal - due to natural aging and/or childbirth. These include:

  • Dryness
  • Painful or difficult intercourse
  • Post-childbirth vaginal tightness or looseness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Lichen sclerosis (an uncommon condition that creates patchy, white skin, often in the genital area)

What Happens During a Laser Vaginal Therapy Procedure?

During the procedure, a gynecologist inserts a vaginal probe that directs carbon dioxide laser energy to stimulate collagen and elastin. This laser technology, already widely used by dermatologists to treat skin conditions, restores vaginal tissue and increases hydration.

Laser Vaginal Therapy lasts for five to seven minutes (per session), and can take place in your gynecologist’s office. For optimal results, a series of three treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is needed, followed by one annual treatment. Many women begin to notice significant improvement after the first treatment.

The procedure has no downtime and produces very little to no discomfort. Your doctor may use a lidocaine numbing jelly for 20 minutes right before the treatment to truly minimize any discomfort.

What Tools and Technology Does Somerset Use for Treatment?

Somerset offers diVa Laser Vaginal Therapy treatments. diVa utilizes Hybrid Fractional Laser (HFL) technology, featuring non-ablative and ablative wavelengths. (Ablative laser tech uses an intense wavelength of light to remove damaged skin/tissues.)

The first laser deeply resurfaces the layers of the vaginal wall, replacing it with brand new, healthy tissue. The second laser heats the layers of the tissue where collagen exists. This treatment method is what allows Somerset to care for patients without discomfort or downtown. It also allows our team to customize your treatments (i.e. targeting, strength, etc.) to maximize your results.

Are There Side Effects from the Treatments?

  • The diVa hybrid fractional vaginal laser therapy may produce pinpoint bleeding in the area of the micro laser channels. This thin reddish-pink discharge usually subsides in 24 - 48 hours.
  • Some patients can also experience mild cramping up to 24-48 hours.
  • Some women have reported feeling a warm sensation during and immediately after diVa.
  • As part of recovery, physicians recommend you abstain from intercourse or inserting anything in the vaginal canal for 48 hrs.

Are There Factors that Disqualify Me from Undergoing this Procedure?

There can be. For example, the following groups will never be approved for laser therapy:

  • Pregnant/Breastfeeding Women
  • Women suffering from an active vaginal/vulvar/pelvic yeast, bacterial, or viral infection
  • Women with a history of wound healing issues

Some women will also need to be cleared on a case-by-case basis to undergo treatment. These include the following:

  • Women dealing with severe vaginal atrophy
  • Women suffering from moderate to severe pelvic organ prolapse
  • Women with undiagnosed pelvic pain or dyspareunia
  • Women who have undergone a recent vaginal surgery
  • Women with a history of rectovaginal or vesicovaginal fistula

Please contact our office at 248-816-9200 to schedule a consultation if you feel this treatment may be of benefit to you. Understanding your treatment options is vital to achieving your optimal health.

Together Women's Health is here for all of your female health needs. Please note that services may vary across practices and locations.
