Is a gynecologic condition affecting your health and quality of life? You are not alone. Many reproductive health conditions can impact your well-being and daily life. And when lifestyle changes, medicine or other options do not ease your symptoms, your doctor may suggest surgery to address the issue.
However, a woman's reproductive system is a delicate and complex system. That's why we specialize not just in surgical care - but in minimally invasive care. Somerset Gynecology and Obstetrics utilizes laser and robotic-based surgical care options (specifically, the da Vinci® Surgery Option) as needed to help women manage and address their reproductive health via the least invasive method possible. If you are concerned about possibly needing surgery, consider consulting with us to see if we're the practice you want to get the job done! Schedule an appointment online or call us at (248) 816-9200.

Surgical services at Somerset utilize the da Vinci® Surgical System. This particular surgical tool was selected by our staff due to its ability to perform operations through fewer small incisions than traditional laparoscopy procedures. By using the da Vinci® Surgical System, we can offer truly minimal invasive reproductive health care and surgery. This reduces patient recovery time as well as the risk of experiencing surgical complications. The system offers seating to surgeons as well as a table for patients, helping doctor and patient stay in close proximity to each other.
The following procedures are all examples of surgeries offered using Somerset’s own care team and equipment:
Hysterectomy (Benign) – For women suffering from a benign (non-cancerous) but life-changing health condition, a hysterectomy may be recommended to remove a patient's uterus. Depending on the type of da Vinci Hysterectomy used, the uterus may be removed through three small cuts, or through a single small cut.
Endometriosis Resection – 'Endometriosis' refers to a condition where uterine tissue grows outside of the uterus itself. The condition causes pain and other problematic symptoms. Surgery can address and remove cysts, implants, and scar tissue caused by endometriosis.
Myomectomy (Fibroid Removal) – Fibroids are noncancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during a woman's childbearing years. 70 - 80% of women develop these growths (although not every woman experience symptoms or needs surgery for them). This non-invasive surgery can remove the fibroid(s) without damaging the uterus itself.
Dilation and Curettage (D&C) – A dilation and curettage procedure, also called a D&C, is a minor surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated, allowing a doctor to remove abnormal tissues in the uterine lining. A D&C is used as a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure, helping to address excessive bleeding, detect reproductive cancer, or help investigate causes of infertility.
Endometrial ablation – Endometrial ablation is a procedure that surgically destroys the lining of the uterus with the intent of reducing heavy menstrual flows. No incisions are needed for endometrial ablation, as the uterus can be accessed through the vagina. Our practice can carry out the procedure with a hysteroscopic thermal ablation tool.
Diagnostic Laparoscopy – This surgical procedure allows your doctors to view your reproductive organs. During the procedure, a laparoscope (a thin viewing tube similar to a telescope) is passed through a small incision in the abdomen. From there, the care team can maneuver the viewing tool to observe the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and nearby organs. Laparoscopies are helpful when examining masses of tissue, confirming endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease, and searching for causes of pain of blockages in the reproductive system.
Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation – This surgical sterilization procedure prevents pregnancy by clamping and blocking or severing and sealing a woman's fallopian tubes. This permanent method of sterilization prevents sperm from reaching an egg, thereby preventing fertilization and pregnancy.
All of these surgical options carry the following benefits compared to other surgical procedures:
The da Vinci System is powered by robotic technology that allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into smaller, precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. One of the instruments is a laparoscope, a thin tube with a tiny camera and light at the end. The camera sends images to a video monitor in the operating room to guide doctors during surgery. The surgeon is 100% in control of the da Vinci System at all times.
Key features of this surgical option include a magnified vision system that gives surgeons a clear, high definition, 3D HD view of the patient and their body. Additionally, surgeries are carried out by wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand. This machine-based flexibility gives surgeons additional control and care options during a procedure.
